Even pirates need education

We all know pirates are great at sailing the seven seas, ransacking islands and even choosing a colour coordinated outfit, but did you know they also love going to school?

Well that's not surprising, because they don't! In fact they hate it! The trouble is, if you're ever going to challenge the top spot, your crew are going to need brains as well as brawn, and that's where the Academy comes in. Drag them out of the tavern and into class to be trained in all the latest skills and special abilities, where as well as Damage and Toughness boosts, they can learn new combat abilities that will help in destroying enemy defences, fighting monsters at sea or even unleashing the uber bomb.

It doesn't end there though, so get your crew into class, get them trained and lets see what an educated pirate can do!

What would be stopping me from training my pirates? I have level 4 Buccaneer and Gunner, and level 2 Brute, and it won't let me train them further. Do I need to upgrade something in order to be able to continue training them?

If you can't train any higher, sounds like you need to upgrade your Academy :)

    That's what I thought :)

if you choose one tree line (e.g. 2nd upgrade for Gunner: Damage Boost +3) then does that mean the alternative (e.g. Toughness Boost +10) cannot be upgraded at a future time?

No, you can upgrade everything, nothing will be locked out.

Why bother having 2 paths for upgrades? Why isn't there just one big line?

So you can prioritise what skills you want to train

While it's neat that you can train everything eventually, it does sorta make the high level game a little samey. It would be cool if somewhere down the line you really split the specialities and make every player choose, and then later create some sort of guild synergy so that to get the ultimate raiding party, you need to swap pirates with your guild mates.

The only downside would be that if you choose the wrong line and change your mind later, you are doomed.
I really like this system where it's not only to upgrade and its done. Here there is a another depth imo. I would like to see more of this.
I really hop the upcoming heroes will have lots of abilities to choose from, jump attacks, stealth, and things like that.

There is depth in choice. If everyone ends up in the same place then no one has really made any choices, and so there is no depth. The only difference might be how long it took you to get there, but that ultimately doesn't matter. No one will be able to tell the difference. You'll have the same as anyone else.

When you are looking at the stats for the types of pirates, range is one of the variables. What do the numbers in the "range" category mean?

Range is very useful for gunners for example since they can fire further. They don't have to stand next to a building to be able to attack it.
